Care of your jewellery

Care.

Diamonds aren’t just forever they’re for everyday too. Clive Ranger staff will help you care for you diamonds but there are certain precautions you should take yourself.

Diamonds must be kept clean to assure their most brilliant performance. Lotions, powders, soaps, even the natural skin oils, put them on diamonds and cut down their brilliance.

Clean diamonds glow because the maximum amount of light can enter and return in a fiery brilliance. It just takes a little special care to keep them that way.

Helpful tips.

Care

  • Don’t let your diamonds come in contact with chlorine bleach- it won’t hurt the diamonds but it can pit or discolour the mounting.
  • Don’t wear a diamond ring when doing rough housework for although it is the hardest gemstone it can be chipped by a hard blow across the grain.
  • Don’t keep diamond pieces jumbled up in a jewellery box or drawer, as diamonds can scratch the surface of each other and also other jewellery.
  • Don’t leave a diamond ring on the side of a wash-basin, it could just fall down the plug hole and be lost forever.
  • Take your diamonds to a jeweller for an annual inspection to check for signs of wear or a loose mounting. We will gladly inspect and clean your diamonds free of charge whether they have been bought from our shops or not.
  • Clean your diamonds, either by professional service at a jeweller, or at home in a quality brand of liquid jewellery cleaner or by immersing them in a small bowl of warm suds with any mild liquid detergent. Brush gently with a toothbrush while in the suds, rinse in a strainer under warm running water. Pat dry with a soft lintless cloth.
  • Make sure when travelling that diamonds are securely and separately packed.
  • Make sure your diamonds are properly insured and that your insurance is regularly updated. It cannot be stressed too highly that insurance values should be kept up to date.

Determining the value of diamonds is very complex. As explained on another page of this site, four factors, namely clarity, colour, cut and carat weight have to be taken into consideration.

diamond%20gradingClive Ranger gemmologists know that when valuing diamonds their accurate judgement, dependable knowledge and experience are most vital as the slightest variation of any of these four factors will have a significant influence on the price.

An up-to-date awareness of current market prices is also essential in assessing the value of diamonds. Only diamond merchants who are constantly handling diamonds can be aware of the marker prices of all the different grades as prices are constantly changing.

The international currency for buying and selling diamonds is the American dollar so that the fluctuation in the price of the dollar against the pound will influence the valuation of diamonds in Britain.

Clive Ranger believes that when having diamonds valued, the public must be educated to look for qualified people. It is important to seek the advice of an organisation with expert valuers who have the knowledge, experience and ability to value diamonds accurately.
