History
Diamond is one of the most precious of all gem stones and the most desired. No other gem has been the object of more intrigue or aroused so much interest.
It is known as "The King of Gems" the gem above all others. Diamonds were first found in
Diamonds have been appreciated by man from time immemorial and have been prized for their durability and rarity. They were originally worn as a talisman, because due to their known hardness they were thought to give strength and courage to the weaver. During Biblical times they were used for engraving purposes.
The Hindus believed diamond was formed by lightening striking rocks and the Greeks, who gave it its ancient name ADAMAS, firmly believed that fire and water, had no effect on it. They attributed it with curative powers, it is said to overcome poisons and delirium, banish needless worry and curb violent feelings and thoughts of murder, lessen anger and strengthen love.
The diamond was also and unfailing test for fidelity, because it was said a stone place on the breast of a sleeping lover one caused the sleeper to tell the most intimate secrets.
At one time only Kings and nobles had the right to wear diamonds. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I it was fashionable, among the wealthy, to wear diamond rings known as ‘scribbling rings’ as they were used to scribble love messages on window panes. Many historical diamonds were worn by rulers as a sign of strength and greatly valued as a form of portable wealth. During modern times diamonds are bought for their beauty and durability and still possess a basic intrinsic value which most other commodities do not have.

A diamond has a magical quality all of its own. It is the most precious gift that a man can give to a woman- a precious symbol that says "I love you".
According to legend the greatest power of diamonds was to give purity, innocence and virtue to the wearer. This explains its use as an engagement ring- a pledge to the betrothed.
Diamonds have been the custom for engagement rings since the fifteenth century. The first diamond engagement ring recorded in history was given to Mary of Burgundy by Maximilian of Austria in August, 1477. The original ring is in the
The smallest diamond ring in history was put on the finger of two year old Princess Mary Tudor daughter of Henry VIII, by Cardinal Wolsey, when she was betrothed in 1518 to the baby Dauphin of France. This was one of the youngest engagements in history.
